.

What Is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It starts in the lower back, travels through the hips, buttocks, and goes down both legs and into the feet.

What Causes Sciatica?

A herniated disc or bone spur can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve. Other causes can be Lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, pregnancy, and muscle spasms. Wearing high heels, being overweight, a mattress that is too soft to sleep on, and not exercising on a regular basis can also make your back pain worse.

What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

Symptoms of sciatica include lower back pain, pain in your butt or leg that gets worse when you sit, pain in your hips, tingling or burning down one leg, weakness when you try to move a leg or foot, lingering pain in one buttock, and shooting pain in your leg that can make it hard to sit up. These symptoms usually affect only one side of your body.

If you experience leg numbness, weakness in the lower extremities, intense pain in your leg or back, or loss of bowel or bladder control, see a doctor as soon as you can.

How Is Sciatica Treated?

Sciatica can be treated various ways once a diagnosis is made. Make an appointment with a chiropractor if you have some of the more severe symptoms or if symptoms do not go away. Our chiropractor will start your visit by asking you questions pertaining to your back pain, like how long you have been experiencing back pain and the severity of it. You will also be asked questions pertaining to your lifestyle, such as work and day to day habits which can affect your back.

Next, a physical exam will be performed to determine which nerve is being affected. X-rays and other tests may be recommended based on the symptoms you give our chiropractor. Chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, acupuncture, and other methods may be recommended to help ease those symptoms.

Realigning your neck to your back with chiropractic adjustments can take pressure off of nerves and soft tissue, which can help lessen chronic pain from sciatica. Massage therapy and acupuncture can help relax and heal the body.
